Lucinda Eng Garcia

My work is nostalgic, rooted in family, tradition and the textures of daily life. But it is also celebratory. It honors what persists. What blooms, even when ignored. I paint to tend to the parts of myself I once hid, and to make visible the layered, sometimes messy fullness of identity.

I work in oil, drawing from memory, family photographs, still life, and imagined spaces. I paint slowly, building each painting in layers. What remains, what disappears, what resurfaces is the journey of each piece. My process mirrors the way identity is formed: not all at once, but gradually, shaped by all that we carry, by what we conceal.

I’ve spent much of my life folding myself to fit, belonging conditionally, never fully. My paintings are where I begin to unfold.

I return to the in-between spaces of my childhood, shaped by growing up Chinese American in a mostly white suburb, where what was left unsaid often carried the most weight.
